Best scenic overlooks around Franklin County, Pa.

South-central Pennsylvania is blessed with some breath-taking scenery. Whether you’re a serious hiker or just passing through, here are some of the best views around Franklin County and nearby areas.

5. Cowans Gap State Park

Nestled between Cove Mountain and Tuscarora Mountain, Cowans Gap State Park offers great opportunities for hiking, swimming, camping, and more. A short hike on one of the trails along Cove Mountain will give you a great view of the lake, park and surrounding valley.

Getting there: Park near the southern end of the lake and follow Standing Stone Trail / Knobsville Road Trail to the marked scenic overlook.

4. Tuscarora Summit

No hiking is needed for this scenic overlook on the Lincoln Highway between Chambersburg and McConnellsburg. This view from the parking lot of The Mountain House Restaurant offers a great look at the town of McConnellsburg and central Fulton County. View map

3. White Rock, Fort Loudon

This view is just a short drive from #4 and gives a panoramic vista of the opposite side of the mountain. To the north, you have a sweeping view of Path Valley and to the east you can see much of Franklin County. You can also explore the view to the north with my Gigpan.

Getting there: Follow Aughwhick Road north 1 mile from The Mountain House Restaurant. Turn right onto Tower Road and follow the road until you reach a turnaround with an outcropping of rock to your right. View map

2. Pine Grove Furnace State Park – Pole Steeple Trail

The Pole Steeple Trail with its overlook of Pine Grove Furnace State Park is one of the best known hiking trails in the region. Be warned, though – the Pole Steeple Trail is a steep hike, but well worth it. The climb to the top gives you a fantastic view of the lake below and surrounding valley.

Getting there: Take the north entrance to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Look for signs for the Pole Steeple Trail parking area.

1. High Rock, Pen-Mar

Just south of the Pennsylvania-Maryland border is a sweeping vista that crosses both states. High Rock is probably the most photographed overlook in the area, and for good reason. Located just off the road with no hiking necessary, this is an easily accessible overlook sure to take your breath away.

Getting there: Follow PenMar High Rock Road about 2 miles south from the village of Pen Mar. The outlook will be on your right. Get directions
